A great many number of species from throughout the tree of life have been recorded as possessing bioluminescent properties (Figure 3, click image to view large). The vast majority of these species exist in the marine environment and members of all major phyla are represented. The pages in this section address the best understood, most abundant and most intriguing studied to date.
