The Threats

As yet there are no known dangers to the organisms exploiting bioluminescence. The field is still far from fully understood and the sheer scale of the occupied deep-sea pelagic zones in which these organisms thrive is in itself some protection. The absolute uniformity of these waters with regards to fundamental physical conditions is staggering. Organic matter availability from the sun-lit waters above does alter across the oceans but as yet knowledge about how strongly bioluminescent species rely on it and how likely they are to be effected by future changes is unknown.
